You must start from scratch.


I have long been skeptical, somewhat sympathetic and certainly intrigued by J.H. Crawford's site about Carfree Cities. Who doesn't love Venice? But Venice is sui generis and therefore has limitations as a model.


Comes now Crawford's new book CARFREE DESIGN MANUAL. I am still intrigued but these words from the publisher's site make me even more skeptical:

The difference between carfree cities and current cities is absolute. You must start from scratch. You would need to reconsider urban theory, the planning process, and the kinds of buildings, streets, and squares that you find most appealing. You would need a new design method to realize your own wishes and those of the people you would prefer to have as neighbors. (italics added)
